Biological Actions of Leukotrienes
نویسنده
چکیده
Leukotrienes are novel mediators derived from arachidonic acid through the 5-lipoxygenase enzyme system. Leukotriene B4 has potent effects on leukocyte function and in vivo induces leukocyte accumulation and changes in vascular permeability and modulates pain responses. Peptidolipid leukotrienes are potent smooth muscle-contracting agents. They may have important cardiovascular actions through mechanisms involving either vasoconstriction or indirect vasodilatation. Evidence for leukotriene production has been found in subjects with allergic conditions and psoriasis, indicating a putative role for these substances in human disease. متن کاملProstaglandins and leukotrienes: advances in eicosanoid biology.
Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are potent eicosanoid lipid mediators derived from phospholipase-released arachidonic acid that are involved in numerous homeostatic biological functions and inflammation. They are generated by cyclooxygenase isozymes and 5-lipoxygenase, respectively, and their biosynthesis and actions are blocked by clinically relevant nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the n...
متن کاملBiological significance of essential fatty acids.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs)--linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) are critical for human survival. EFAs are readily available in the diet. But, to derive their full benefit, EFAs need to be metabolized to their respective long-chain metabolites. EFAs not only form precursors to respective prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxanes (TXs), and leukotrienes (LTs), but also give rise to lipox...

5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway is the major source of potent proinflammatory leukotrienes (LTs) issued from the metabolism of arachidonic acid (AA), and best known for their roles in the pathogenesis of asthma. These lipid mediators are mainly released from myeloid cells and may act as physiological autocrine and paracrine signalling molecules, and play a central role in regulating the interacti...

Polyunsaturated fatty acids play a role as precursors of biologically active compounds that can act as mediators or modulators of various cell functions. Thus three main groups of derivatives the prostaglandins, the thromboxanes, and recently discovered leukotrienes are formed by oxygenation and further transformation of various polyunsaturated fatty acids of which arachidonic acid plays t...
